Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson Community Garden
FULL SHOW RELEASE
I GET FUNNY was created and curated by the Queens Legacy Lab Community Enterprise program, led by Dr. Christopher Teel, with respect for 50 Cent and the community garden established in his name. We brought together two things that might not normally share the same space, a community garden and live comedy, to create a uniquely Queens vibe.
The event also became a real world workforce development experience, paying nearly $1,000 to neighborhood youth and young adults for work in event setup, strategy, social media, business administration, marketing, promotion, and production support. Community Enterprise participants also have opportunities for ongoing employment and business development as we continue building the I GET FUNNY brand and its online presence.
I’d like to give a huge thank you to Khia of the @50Garden. She has made this partnership very delightful. Tao Shoots is our main photographer and videographer, he did his thing! Nnambdi Iwu of Casa De Iwu Event Space provided chairs, and Greg Mays of A Better Jamaica Inc. provided portable lighting for the outdoor event. Shout out to Coach Good, Tay Halla, and G Unit Dispo for their online engagement and encouragement. Thank you to Rahni at Digital Dandelion for the business support.
Our hosts, Cookie and DarkskinRandy, always bring amazing energy to our events. Thank you to all of the comedic talent who helped make the show what it was. Everybody brought their A game. And lastly, shout out to Steve King, who has been a huge part of developing this idea. We’re going to make sure we lock in again really soon.
Our goal is to grow I GET FUNNY into a Queens entertainment brand that produces at least three live shows each year, while continuing to build an online community around Queens comedy, culture, and local talent.
Thank you to everyone who helped make I GET FUNNY happen. Subscribe and look out for the full show release this Thanksgiving.
Goal: Create ongoing opportunities for young people to develop human capital while providing a space for local talent to thrive.
